Like all good puzzle box makers, Kagen is gifted and productive. He’s been distinguishing himself in the arts most of his life:
bulletIn grade school, Kagens 4th grade teacher had him teach art projects to the rest of the class. He taught geometric modular origami and also was in charge of teaching the entire school to fold 1000 paper cranes.
bulletKagen was commissioned to make a permanent display for the Americans Bank of Denver while in his freshman year in high school. He folded 100 dollar-bills into eight modular geometric sculptures of his own design.
bulletHe is designated a master of origami by members of the Front Range Origami Guild in Denver. A master of origami is one who folds his or her own original designs. He often taught classes for the guild when he was a kid.
bulletWinner of Denver Public Schools art competition Portfolio Award - senior year high school. Kagen was granted a scholarship to Denver Institute of Art for this. He turned it down in favor of Colorado College.
bullet3rd place in Colorado inter-collegiate chess competition first year in college. He still enjoys playing chess and also has a newfound love for Go.
bullet1st place Rawles Exam Senior year in college. This is an extremely difficult creative thinking oriented math test put together every year by the Colorado College math department.
bulletFounder of the Colorado College Swing club. Kagen loves going swing dancing when he gets the chance. He can do East coast style and Lindy-Hop. He started to teach classes on dance in college.
bulletKagen Schaefer’s Block Puzzle Box wins the Puzzler’s Choice Award in the 2002 Puzzle Design Contest at the International Puzzle party in Antwerp, Belgium!
bulletKagen’s Decorted box wins honorable mention in the 2003 International Puzzle Design contest in Chicago.

Kagen

Kagen likes to spend his spare time writing philosophy, reading books, and critiquing various forms of art work. He likes to study and experience the arts in all it’s forms, including film, music, literature, dance, painting, food, architecture, and especially sculpture. He enjoys having fun conversation with friends and has a great sense of humor.
